課程概述

THIS COURSE EXPLORES THE PHENOMENON OF WESTERN MUSIC IN THE CONTEXT OF WORLD MUSICAL TRADITIONS AS A WHOLE. IN OTHER WORDS, IT CONSIDERS WESTERN MUSIC NOT AS AN AUTONOMOUS, SELF-CONTAINED PRACTICE, BUT MORE BROADLY INVESTIGATES THE INTERACTIONS, TENSIONS, AND CONFLICTS AMONG DIVERSE MUSICAL STYLES, CULTURES, AND IDEOLOGIES, WITH THE CANONICAL EUROPEAN REPERTORIES AS A FOCAL POINT. HENCE, THE ISSUES OF HEGEMONY, EXOTICISM, COLONIALISM, AND POSTCOLONIALISM WILL BE OF PARTICULAR CONCERN IN THIS COURSE. WE SHALL CONSIDER THE WAYS IN WHICH THE OFTEN UNEQUAL POWER RELATIONSHIPS THAT CHARACTERIZE THE ENCOUNTERS OF DIFFERENT TRADITIONS ARE BOTH HIGHLY PROBLEMATIC AND POTENTIALLY PRODUCTIVE OF VITAL NEW CULTURAL FORMS, PRACTICES, AND IDENTITIES.

TO DEVELOP AN UNDERSTANDING OF GLOBAL MUSICAL AND CULTURAL INTERACTIONS NOT MERELY AS THE "MIX" OF CULTURES, BUT AS COMPLEX, DYNAMIC INTERACTIONS OFTEN WITH SOCIAL, POLITICAL AND ETHICAL IMPLICATIONS
